968 / 944 - Performance/Headers-Exhaust Systems
The first area to work on in the development of the 968 power plant is the header and exhaust. Performance modifications like re-profiled camshafts or ported cylinder heads will flow more. The exhaust needs to be maximized to reduce restriction and take advantage of the potential gains. What's curious about the stock 968 system is the use of an elaborate twin pipes from the restrictive resonator to the muffler.
RS barn with Michael Mount Motorsport Development have created a complete system including Header, Exhaust, High flow Catalytic converter (optional) and Hi flow muffler with a polished stainless tip.
To ensure the best performance and sound, we tested over a dozen different high performance mufflers. There were three criteria for the muffler-sound/ noise level, resonance, and performance. Most had an acceptable sound and noise level but resonance was the problem. Finally we found a muffler that met our standards.
The Header and exhaust are Ceramic coated inside and out for appearance, durability and exhaust heat retention. The exhaust uses all stock mounting hardware locations with slip fit connections and 1" wide Euro clamps. Complete system weighs 38lbs. less than stock.
Dyno tuning and testing revealed performance gains over the whole rpm range. Testing with other performance products showed the need for a header/exhaust to maximize their performance.
